Overview

Bookmarks Search is a Chrome extension that provides fast, local search for your browser bookmarks. Your privacy is important. This extension stores your data locally and does not collect, track, or share any personal data. The only outbound network requests are for website icons (favicons) and, for words you save to the Vocabulary Manager, optional dictionary lookups, both described in detail below.

Data Collection

We do not collect any personal data. Specifically:

No personal information is collected
No browsing history is tracked
No analytics or telemetry data is sent
No cookies are used for tracking
No personal data, bookmarks, or browsing history is transmitted to external servers

Data Usage

All data used by this extension is stored locally on your device and never leaves your browser:

Permissions Explained

This extension requests only the permissions it needs to work. Each one is described below, including what it is used for and what it is never used for.

bookmarks Used to read your bookmark tree so the extension can search your bookmarks and show matching results. It reads bookmark titles, URLs, and folder names only to build a search index on your own device. It never edits, deletes, moves, or uploads your bookmarks.

tabs Used to open a bookmark when you select a result or press a keyboard shortcut. Enter opens the bookmark in the current tab, and Ctrl+Enter opens it in a new background tab. The extension does not read the contents of your open tabs and does not track which websites you visit.

contextMenus Used to add right-click menu items, such as opening the search page quickly or searching with text you have highlighted on a page. These entries appear only when you right-click, and no page content is collected or stored.

storage Used to save your personal vocabulary word list with chrome.storage.local so it remains available between sessions. This list is kept on your device only and is never sent to any server.

notifications Used to show short status messages inside the extension, for example confirming that your bookmarks finished loading. These messages are informational only and contain no personal data.

New Tab page override (chrome_url_overrides) This is a feature setting rather than a permission, but it is worth explaining. The extension replaces the New Tab page with its bookmark search interface so you can start searching the moment you open a new tab. It accesses only your bookmarks, never your browsing activity.

Third-Party Services

The extension may contact the following external services:

Favicons (website icons): to show an icon next to each bookmark, using only the bookmark's domain name:

Dictionary lookups: when you view a word saved in the Vocabulary Manager, its definition, phonetics, and pronunciation audio are fetched using only that single word:

Google Translate (only when you click): the vocabulary card has a "Translate" icon. Clicking it opens Google Translate (translate.google.com) in a new tab, pre-filled with the word, its definition, and example. The extension makes no automatic request to Google Translate, and this happens only when you choose to click the link.

In every case, only a domain name or a single saved word (and its dictionary text) is sent. No bookmarks, URLs, browsing history, or personal data are transmitted to these services.

Data Sharing

We do not sell, trade, or transfer any user data to third parties. No data ever leaves your device except the favicon and dictionary requests described above, and the Google Translate page you may choose to open.
